Work is well underway on the construction of the new scheme on the site of the former Grovetree House residential home on Cullingtree Road, just off the Grosvenor Road. The project is a partnership between Clanmil Housing and the Belfast Trust and will provide 30 contemporary, high quality self-contained apartments for older people living with dementia in a supported living environment. After much deliberation a judging panel made up of representatives from Clanmil, the Trust, and the local community have decided that when completed this Autumn the new housing scheme will be called Cullingtree Meadows, bringing together ideas suggested by Caragh McBride and Caitlin Albarando. Runner up Conor Dougan, also a pupil at the school, received a prize too. The standard and range of names suggested has been really impressive! Being involved with the community has left us in no doubt that the people with dementia who will live in Cullingtree Meadows, will be welcomed and fully integrated into this supportive, caring community. Over the last 18 months Clanmil Housing has adopted an enhanced approach to the delivery of social value in its procurement competitions for the construction and maintenance of social housing. All procurement contracts now include social clauses which aim to deliver real opportunities for the long term unemployed and support the development of the communities where Clanmil work. Over the past 18 months we have worked hard to ensure that our procurement contracts really deliver on social value. While this can deliver real opportunities, we wanted to go further.

Moneymore, County Londonderry On every count Springhill is a truly attractive house. Its brilliant white walls, dark, narrow windows and grey slate roof, capped by chimney stacks of dull red brick, blend harmoniously into the sylvan landscape that surrounds it, and no-one who ventures here can help but fall beneath its spell. Its interior has a lived in and welcoming feel, and you can just sense that little has changed in a centuries. Indeed those to whom this place was once home would have little trouble recognising it today, no matter which period of its three hundred year history they happen to have stepped out of.
Today visitors to the house can admire its period furnishings and the renowned oak staircase, whilst enjoying the eerie sensation of having their every footstep watched by long dead members of the family whose portraits gaze down from the walls. The moment you step into it the temperature drops alarmingly and it remains cold throughout all the time you spend there — a fact that the guides who lead the tours put down to the “presence,”which is known to haunt the room.
In George Lenox-Conyngham, a man prone to bouts of melancholy, was away on his duties in the army when he received news that his children had gone down with smallpox. Out of his mind with worry he awaited news of their conditions, and when none came he abandoned his post early one night and headed for Springhill. On the way he met his commanding officer Robert Stewart, but since they were good friends, and given that he had similarly covered for Stewart on other occasions, he felt sure that he would understand the urgency and necessity of his quest.
In one of them, he said he thought of her as the Wishing Tree, lifted, root and branch, to heaven. She remembered how local people, seeking a cure, had thrust coins and nails into its bark. My father had driven us, with fearful reluctance.
It was led by Richard de Clare , called Strongbow due to his prowess as an archer. In , Henry arrived in Ireland in order to review the general progress of the expedition. He wanted to re-exert royal authority over the invasion which was expanding beyond his control. Henry successfully re-imposed his authority over Strongbow and the Cambro-Norman warlords and persuaded many of the Irish kings to accept him as their overlord, an arrangement confirmed in the Treaty of Windsor.
The bull encouraged Henry to take control in Ireland in order to oversee the financial and administrative reorganisation of the Irish Church and its integration into the Roman Church system. Henry was authorised to impose a tithe of one penny per hearth as an annual contribution. This church levy, called Peter’s Pence , is extant in Ireland as a voluntary donation.
In turn, Henry accepted the title of Lord of Ireland which Henry conferred on his younger son, John Lackland , in This defined the Irish state as the Lordship of Ireland. Norman settlements were characterised by the establishment of baronies, manors, towns and the seeds of the modern county system. From the mid th century, after the Black Death , Norman settlements in Ireland went into a period of decline.

Last all-Ireland census goes online Thousands of Irish census documents, many dating back to the early 19th Century, have been made available to the public online for the first time. They include partial census records from to , a substantial amount from counties now in Northern Ireland.

Most of them are not the original documents, but are contemporaneous copies of census forms archived in offices in what later became Northern Ireland.

Former USA Gymnastics doctor Nasser sentenced to years in jail First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said Scotland should be allowed to “effectively stay in the single market” following reports that Northern Ireland and the Republic could maintain regulatory alignment after Brexit. A leaked draft of plans for the Irish border after Brexit showed British and Irish officials had agreed proposals that would effectively keep Northern Ireland in both the single market and customs union after Brexit by retaining EU regulations – unlike the rest of the UK.
The SNP leader seized on the news as a sign that Scotland could also remain in the EU trade agreements after Britain leaves the bloc, something the pro-independence party has been pushing for since the referendum. News of the draft document broke as Theresa May attended a working lunch in Brussels with Jean Claude Juncker, the European Commission president, as she attempted to shift Brexit negotiations to the next phase where the future trade relationship can be discussed.

Ireland national football team — On 18 February , 15 months after the founding of the Irish FA, Ireland made their international debut against England , losing 13—0 in a friendly played at Bloomfield in Belfast. This remains the record defeat for the team, and also England’s largest winning margin. In , Ireland competed in the inaugural British Home Championship and lost all three games. Ireland did not win their first game until 19 February , a 4—1 win over Wales in Belfast.
Between their debut and this game, they had a run of 14 defeats and 1 draw, the longest run without a win in the s. Despite the end of this run, heavy defeats continued. On 3 March , they lost 11—0 to Wales and three weeks later, on 24 March, lost 10—2 to Scotland. Further heavy defeats came on 15 March when they lost 9—1 to England, on 18 February when they lost 13—2 to England and on 2 February when they lost 11—0 to Scotland.
In , the Irish FA also changed its rules governing the selection of non-resident players. Before then the Ireland team selected its players exclusively from the Irish League, in particular the three Belfast-based clubs Linfield , Cliftonville and Distillery. The change in policy produced dividends as Ireland won 1—0. In , Southern Ireland gained independence as the Irish Free State , later to become a republic under the name of Ireland. Amid these political upheavals, a rival football association, the Football Association of Ireland , emerged in Dublin in and organised a separate league and international team.
The Irish FA continued to organise its national team on an all-Ireland basis.
